4 Classics Players Win NCAA National Championships

Akron wins DI, Messiah 3-Peats in DIII

When the Akron University Zips Men’s Soccer Team beat Louisville on Sunday, December 15th in Santa Barbara, CA it marked the end to a fantastic fall season of NCAA soccer for PA Classics Alumni.    

Helping to lead Akron to the Mens NCAA Division 1 title was former Classics player Zarek Valentin.  As a starting central defender for the Zips, Valentin was 5th in minutes played this season and played well enough to earn All-Tournament Team Honors.

Messiah College’s Men’s program enjoyed another banner year in 2010 as they took home their third straight NCAA Division 3 National Title, slipping past Lynchburg College 2-1 (OT) on 12/4 in San Antonio, Texas.  The Falcons have now claimed 8 National Championships in the past 11 years.  On this year’s team there were 3 former PA Classics players; Freshman Midfielder Sheldon Myer, Freshman Midfielder Josiah Groff, and Junior Midfielder Thomas Renko.

The Messiah College Women’s program was on the short end of the Championship game stick as they lost 2-1 to Hardin-Simmons University on 12/4in San Antonio, Texas.  The Lady Falcons were aiming for their third straight National Championship, and the continuation of an NCAA best 76 game winning streak, when they lost in the final.  Former PA Classics players on the Messiah roster include; Sophomore Midfielder Alex Brandt, Senior Defender Katie Hoffsmith, Junior Forward Leah Sipe, and Sophomore Midfielder Elizabeth Phillips.
